Row's
Rent-a-Roadster, 229 Cannery Row, Monterey, CA. Call: (831) 647-1929
offers a unique way to see the spectacular 17 Mile Drive in
Monterey's Pebble Beach gated area. While just a regular
car will do (and hundreds enter for the tour on a daily basis),
a roadster is simply unique, providing the fresh, open air
experience that this region deserves on a sunny day when the
skies are blue, the air is warm and you're in the mood to soak
up the ambience of one of the top drives in the USA.
Rent-a-Roadster rents visitors to the
Monterey Bay region a reproduction Model A Ford Roadster with four seats
plus a rumble seat, Mercedes SSK two-seater or Ford Phaeton which seats 5
people. Most of the cars are automatic and are easy to drive. Monterey
Rent-A-Roadster convertibles are ideal for making a loop through Pebble
Beach along 17 Mile Drive. The company's rental location is in the heart of
Cannery Row in Monterey. www.rent-a-roadster.com
In the photo above is the
section of the tour that winds along the Spyglass Hill Golf
Course that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. The Spyglass Hill
Golf Course is a public golf club owned and operated by the
Pebble Beach Company, which also owns the Pebble Beach Golf
Links, The Links at Spanish Bay, and the Del Monte Golf Course.
Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., it's been listed in Golf
Digest as one of America's 100 Greatest Public Courses.
The Glass features ocean views of the Pacific Ocean on the first
five holes. The other 13 wind through the Del Monte Forest.
Spy Glass Hill Golf Course takes its name from the classic tale of
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was inspired by
the wonders of the peninsula's forest and sea. The holes on the
course are named after characters in Treasure Island. The first
hole, Treasure Island, goes down and to left almost 90 degrees.
From the tee, a player can see the tops of the trees in the Del
Monte Forest, the Santa Cruz Mountains and the Monterey
Peninsula. Other hole names include "Black Dog" and "Billy
Bones".

For us common folks
traveling through this treasured trove of scenery in any old
car, be it a VW Bug, a Ford Taurus, an Impala, a Honda, Hyundai,
Toyota Corolla, Jeep Explorer or whatever, the drive is still
one of the finest experiences you'll find. Issued a map at the
entry gate to Pebble Beach (be prepared to pay a fee), there are
around 20 stops on this guided tour. You don't have to
park the car at all of them but it's kind of fun to turn off the
engine, get out and see what each dot on the map features.
You'll notice bus tours do this with their passengers spotted at
each point. In fact, if you're tired of the same faces
along the way, you have to hold back or speed up to miss them as
your stops may coincide with a lot of other people and tour
groups taking a similar pace.
